I had no care giver last night again. This makes about a half dozen times in two weeks. Each time this happens, I am either forced to go to the street to find some homeless people to help me into bed or if I don't find anybody I just end up sitting up all night in my powerchair.
Roland (my Micronesian neighbor's 30ish son, who takes care of both mom and dad, and who also has his full time job to attend to), who I am very fortunate to have as a night time care giver can't get here until after midnight.
This is not okay, either way.
The main problem I see is that Kaiser QUEST only pays for a quarter hour for someone like Roland (my neighbor's 30ish year old son) to help me into bed. No standard care giver or service will show up for less than a minimum of a full hour at their regular rate and I have not even been able to fnd one of those. It seems no one is willing to work as a care giver for $2.00 an hour and certainly not if they have to travel here to do it.
The minimum pay should be at the hourly rate for at least an hour or $10.00. This could get someone to show up for $70.00 a week.
I don't want to use the hours I have for my care giver during the day on a person to put me into bed at night because I really need my care giver during the day time. Sitting up all night causes my legs to swell horribly. If I am in my bed, I can elevate my legs which prevents the swelling.
Attempting to get myself into bed without help, risks falling each time. I must also take money out of my own pocket to pay the homeless and none of them will get me into bed for less than $10.00 either. This also forces me to keep cash on hand to pay them as they want instant payment
and not be forced to wait a month or two to get their money.
These are the simple realities I have to deal with, every day.
Aloha,
